Maybe I'm too late. Clearly its a generational thing. There's a good chance I just don't get it...

Social networking is the term applied to sites like MySpace and FaceBook where you post as little or as much (as is usually the case) about yourself as you like. The idea is to find people with similar interests and connect with old and current friends.... at least I think that's the idea. There are other forms of socially connected sites out there. For instance, I get my daily dose of tech news from Digg . Digg relies on its users to submit and moderate both the news items and the comments that other users post. Here's my Digg profile.

One of the foundations of  social networking is sharing your interests and plug in in all aspects of your online life. To that end I'm going to spend the next month or so playing with MySpace and FaceBook as well as some other "web 2.0" tools. I've had my Flickr photos online for a few years now. In addition to my Flickr badge on the right you'll notice my Last.FM play list. Last.FM is a social site based around your music interests. Its a great companion to a site like LaLa.com (which I talked about here ).

I'm going to play with this stuff a lot over the next few weeks and see if I can figure out what the kids already know...
